China’s Guangdong province is projected to complete 50,000 5G base stations by the end of third quarter of 2020, with an aim to have a total of 60,000 stations and 20 million subscribers by the end of this year, the United Daily News reported on March 5. As of the end of 2019, the number of 5G stations in the province amounted to 35,988. In 2019 alone, business volume of telecommunications providers in the province totaled 1.2 trillion RMB (US$173.2 billion; US$1 = 6.93 RMB), up 55.7% compared to 2018 and accounting for 12% of the total telecom business volume. Despite of the coronavirus outbreak, business volume of telecommunications providers in the province is expected to still grow 20% year-on-year in 2020. The 5G base stations are estimated to cover over 90% of population in the province by the end of 2020. Other than 5G base stations, the province has completed 7,700 optical fibers networks with each connecting over 20 households. In 2020, it is estimated 100M optical fiber network users will account for more than 90% of total population in the province while IPTV users will reach 23 million, 21 million of which are 4K users.
